The Facebook litmus test

Too many 'friends' on Facebook? Here's a simple way to weed them out:
  1. Enable birthday notifications (under Account > Account Settings > Notifications > Has a birthday coming up (weekly email) ).
  2. Each week, see if you care enough to wish your 'friend' a Happy Birthday.

Why I switched from Flickr to Picasa

I'd been a loyal user of Flickr (pro) for several years until I recently decided to make the switch to Picasa Web Albums. The main reasons were:

1) The Picasa desktop client. The Flickr organizr, though it was improved over the years, can't beat the speed of Picasa. It was also annoying having to organize my photos in two different places. The Sync to Web option in Picasa rocks my world. Recent improvements to the client that encouraged me to make the switch include the improved geotagging and tagging options. Plus the face-identifying algorithm is really cool.

2) Changes to the Google paid storage plan. $20 USD/year now buys you 80GB of storage. I have over 10 years of photos - several years in which I took photos daily - and I haven't hit the limit. I upload photos in their original size and the online albums serve as an offsite backup of my photos.

3) I take photos to share with friends and family. It was difficult to share photos on Flickr with people who were not signed up for Flickr - especially private albums. Picasa has a privacy option to share unlisted albums easily. I also found people who were less tech-savvy had issues finding out how to go to the next photo in Flickr - they always try to click directly on the photo to try to go to the next one, like in Facebook. The Picasa interface, though not perfect, seemed easier to navigate. Flickr has an amazing community of avid photographers, but in the end my photos are for people I know, not strangers.

A work in progress (I'm about 8 years behind right now):
